LES PAUL AWARDED
THE 2007 NATIONAL MEDAL OF THE ARTS |
|
| |
|
November
15, 2007.
President and Mrs. Bush today presented
Les Paul with the National Medal of the Arts in recognition of his
lifetime of indelible contributions to the American artistic landscape.
The National Medal is America's highest honor for achievement in the arts.
Today in a special White House ceremony, the White House Council on the
Arts in cooperation with the National Endowment of the Arts cited Les Paul
for his innovation as a musician, his pioneering designs of the electric
guitar, and his groundbreaking recording techniques that have influenced
the development of American jazz, blues, pop music and inspired
generations of guitarists. Of course, visiting the White House is
nothing new to Les, who first played it in 1939 for President Roosevelt.

November, 2007.
Nonagenarian Les Paul’s
six-string namesake guitar is just the tip of the iceberg of the man’s
contribution to music and recording, as evidenced in John Paulson’s
entertaining and illuminating biographical documentary, part of the
PBS-aired American Masters series.
